Full marks for Nursery in city’s ‘Scores on the Doors’ certification

October,009

Parents of children at Little Learners nursery on Victoria Dock, Hull can rest in the safe knowledge that their children are attending a nursery that has been certified ‘excellent’ by Hull City Council’s ‘Scores on the Doors’ scheme.

The nursery, which is owned by Hull-based company Sewell Group, has been given a Grade A certificate for environmental standards following an unannounced inspection on 14th September 2009.

Currently the scheme is being piloted by Hull City Council along with a few other select councils nationally, in partnership with the Food Standards Agency. Environmental health officers have been conducting surprise inspections in and around the Hull area at cafes, restaurants, supermarkets, takeaways, pubs, clubs, residential homes, schools, nurseries, bakeries and hospitals, in an effort to give each establishment a score.

The nursery achieved the highest possible grade, which requires a scoring range of between 90 and 100 per cent and their inspector, Paul Key environmental health officer for Hull City Council, said: “The standards found at the time of my inspection were very good indeed with all current legislative requirements met.

“As a result of this, no remedial action is necessary at this stage in time. You [Little Learners] should be congratulated on the standards set and the challenge will be to maintain these standards over a period of time.”

Businesses who have been awarded the top two grades qualify to apply for the Healthier Options Award, to show they are committed to providing both a healthy environment and healthy options in the food they supply. Which Little Learners hope to achieve next, to give parents peace of mind that their children are being fed the healthiest food available, in a comfortable, friendly and, most importantly, clean nursery.

Rachel Gouldson nursery manager, said: “We are very proud with our latest environmental inspection and feel it represents the hard work and dedication that has been made in this area including our newly upgraded kitchen.

“We make every effort to offer, prepare and serve a healthy varied menu, including meeting children’s individual dietary requirements.  We look forward to retaining this mark in the future and displaying it with pride.”
