Hull-based nursery celebrates grandparents' contribution with crafts and cake

04 October, 2010

A nursery based on Hull's Victoria Dock held its annual Grandparent's Day last Friday, to coincide with the national day honouring grandparents who have such an impact in the lives of young children.

Little Learners Nursery, which is owned by development and retail company Sewell Group, hosted an afternoon of craft events, tea and cakes for the children and their grandparents from 2.30pm onwards.

Some of the children worked with their grandparents on craft projects, creating placemats with a poem in the centre which were then decorated with the child's handprints and laminated as a memento of the day and keepsake for grandparents.

The afternoon was rounded off with a traditional tea party, with cakes and buns and a choice of tea or juice for grandparents and children.

Nursery manager Rachel Gouldson organised this year's event and was thrilled with the turnout. She said: "Grandparents provide a lot of support, whether it's taking care of their grandchildren outside nursery hours, picking them up from the nursery when parents can't or even just taking their grandchildren out for the day for a treat.

"The aim of Grandparent's Day, especially at Little Learners, is to recognise the incredible contribution that the children's grandparents make and to give something back to them.

"We had a really positive response from the invitations that we sent out, and it was quite a busy day, with around 20 grandparents attending."
